Jamia Masjid

The 18th century Jamia Masjid, also known as Sangeen Masjid or Jumma Masjid, is a solemn presence close to the crowded Commercial Street.

Emperor Aurangazeb is said to have laid the foundation for this architectural marvel with its impressively carved 90 feet minarets, Mughal-era domes, and golden inscriptions in Persian. A remarkable feature of the mosque is the frame of Mehrab (pulpit), carved out of a single block of black granite. Compared to the carvings on the pillars in the courtyard, the ones inside are an artistic delight.

On the left of the courtyard is a water pool with two beautiful fountains for ablutions. Exquisite designs of huge leaves and intricate carvings add beauty to the roof. A panel of remarkable Persian style carvings of flowers and leaves adorns the upper part of the walls. Large, shiny chandeliers speak of a bygone era.

There are magnificent twin minarets inside the masjid that stretch upto the spherical domes above the balconies. These minarets have been ornamented with a graceful assembly of a large number of pigeon holes. Some years ago, a delicate pattern, previously concealed under successive layers of white paint, was discovered inside the Jumma Masjid. Festive seasons sees the minars as well as the entire edifice of the masjid beautifully decorated with lights, adding to its beauty.

There is a window on the top of the dome under which the Imam (head priest) prays. The relics of Prophet Mohammed and Hazrat Abdul Qadar Jeelani are kept there. The relics are hairs from the beard of the Prophet and Hazrat Jeelani which are shown to the faithful on special occasions.

Originally built in 1790 by Haji Qazi Abdul Quddus Saheb, the mosque had the patronage of Tipu Sultan. The fourteen huge stone pillars in the prayer hall were transported and crafted by skilled artisans from Mysore. The main prayer hall can accommodate about 1500 people, but on Fridays about 2500 to 3000 people come for prayers.

The Jumma Masjid is proud of its legacy of communal harmony. To date it has not had a single religious clash, in spite of the fact that it is situated in between two temples. To its left is the 19th century Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple and to the right is the 107 year old Sri Venugopalaswamy Temple.
